After 12 years of managing social enterprises for international organisations and the mounting pressure on climate change mitigation initiatives, Esther Mutuma was inspired to incorporate the Boreka Group. Esther then requested Reuben Mbindu to join Boreka as a co-founder given his vast knowledge and experience in the finance sector and his personal dedication to working on development agenda with communities.
The vision of Boreka is to be the transformative vehicle to accelerate and scale climate change mitigation and adaptation to reach millions of farmers and unlock millions of tonnes of carbon credit sequestration potential. This will in turn unlock carbon finance opportunities that have emerged in line with changing trends and demands in the climate change and carbon finance space.
2023 Marked the launch of the full project design & implementation as part of strategic partnerships with local financial institutions as well as other global institutions operating in the region who are keen to embrace Boreka’s expertise to guarantee the success of their sustainability initiatives.
Boreka continues to seek like minded partners who are committed to walking the talk in taking action to develop sustainable solutions by working with nature & communities to improve both lives and make the planet liveable for the medium and long term.
Boreka's main objective is to catalyse and accelerate the implementation of climate action by adopting technological interventions to mobilise, manage and track tree growing activities. Boreka partners with communities to drive and at scale the much needed tree growing activities. Boreka intends to scale to reach millions of small holder farmers and unlock carbon finance opportunities that have emerged in line with changing trends and demands in the climate change and carbon finance space. Boreka partners with major public and private finance institutions including governments and international development organisations to finance the project expansion.
Kiteme Mutie and his wife, Patricia, were amongst the first group of farmers to participate in Boreka’s pre feasibility study in 2022, making them pioneers in the journey towards recruiting smallholder farmer communities to engage in sustainable climate solutions. They went through a silvicultural training & climate change course designed to capacitate farmers to successfully engage in the program. They made sacrifices to water, mulch and tend to the tender trees under difficult drought conditions in Kitui. Their resilience bore outstanding results of healthy trees as pictured in the above image taken 6 months after planting. In 2023, they received a second batch of seedlings, distributed by Boreka under the proof of concept partnership with NCBA. Due to their dedication and success, they have become Boreka’s model farmers, in their community, inspiring and encouraging other farmers to follow suit. The Kiteme’s journey is a testament that with the right support, communities can positively contribute to accelerating climate action and drive meaningful environmental impact while improving their own resilience and livelihoods. Their success story demonstrates that Boreka's theory of change in empowering farmers through technology and innovation will provide the basis for transformative change in livelihoods and accelerate climate change mitigation.
